Who are we

Just your typical nerds, a group of lifelong gaming enthusiasts who have forged an unbreakable bond over three decades of shared adventures. Together, we have explored a multitude of genres, indulging in the captivating realms of board games, RPGs, and tabletop games.

Our journey began amidst the picturesque landscapes of rural Yorkshire, UK, at what we fondly referred to as “The farm.” It was within these humble surroundings that we first delved into the immersive world of Dungeons & Dragons, igniting our passion for collaborative storytelling and thrilling gameplay.

Now, as time has passed and life has taken us on diverse paths, we find ourselves scattered across the country with families of our own. Yet, our passion for gaming endures, and we have adapted to the digital era. Embracing technology, we unite online, forming a close-knit group known affectionately as “The digital farm.”

With the same camaraderie and spirit of adventure that defined our early gaming days, we continue to explore new frontiers, share laughter, and create unforgettable memories. Through the power of digital connectivity, we bridge the physical distance, coming together to embark on epic quests, unravel mysteries, and engage in thrilling battles—all from the comfort of our own homes.

How and why did we start Wrenegade Studios?

After immersing ourselves in a thrilling 6-year campaign of Dungeons & Dragons 5e, our gaming group yearned for a brief respite from sorcery and combat. We sought new gaming adventures to infuse freshness into our weekly digital farm nights. As we scoured the gaming landscape, proposing various game ideas, we discovered a surprising pattern—a lack of options that matched our desires. Suddenly, we found ourselves with a growing list of game concepts that simply didn’t exist in the market.

And then, a brilliant idea took hold of us. Why not create these games ourselves? In December 2020, Alex and Paul, the brothers at the heart of our team, embarked on a research journey that would shape our very first tabletop role-playing game— “Beyond the Veil.”

As we delved deeper into the concept of crafting a game that could be experienced both in the virtual and physical realms, we found ourselves unraveling the intricacies of the game industry. Weeks of dedicated brainstorming ensued, fueling our creative drive. Drawing upon our collective knowledge and passion, we gave birth to our own game development company—Wrenegade Studios.

Through our relentless research, we discovered that our vision extended beyond merely creating a game for ourselves. We aspired to craft an immersive experience that would captivate and enthrall players around the world. Our journey had evolved from a personal quest for new gaming horizons to a grand endeavor to share our passion and creativity with others.

With “Beyond the Veil” as our flagship project, we forged ahead, fueled by the desire to bring something exceptional to the gaming community. Our commitment to quality, innovation, and the spirit of camaraderie drives us forward as we breathe life into our game, crafting a universe where mystery, suspense, and discovery converge.

Welcome to Wrenegade Studios, where our dreams take shape, and extraordinary gaming experiences come to life. Join us on this thrilling adventure as we redefine the boundaries of tabletop role-playing games and embark on a journey “Beyond the Veil.”

Why choose Wrenegade Studios as your name?

In our quest to find the perfect name for our game development company, we engaged in deep contemplation. We desired a name that would resonate across genres, embracing the diverse range of games we had planned. We wanted a name that transcended limitations and encompassed our vision for games that spanned the entire spectrum of gaming experiences.

During this process, we stumbled upon a significant realisation—a name that held deep personal meaning to our team. The concept of “Wrenegade Studios” was born, intertwining heartfelt connections and personal stories.

Alex and Paul, the brothers of our team, cherished the tiny Wren bird as a tribute to their late father, who held a special fondness for this beautiful creature. The Wren bird also served as the logo for their father’s woodworking business, which he ran alongside his brother, symbolising family ties and craftsmanship.

Adding to the significance, Dan, another esteemed member of our team, named his firstborn child Wren, endearingly referring to them as “Wrenegade.” This endearing nickname pays homage to the spirit of adventure and individuality that we hold dear.

As we embarked on our quest to find the perfect name, it became evident that the answer was right before our eyes. The name “Wrenegade Studios” emerged as a perfect blend of personal connection, familial ties, and a deep-rooted appreciation for nature and creativity.

With the name chosen, we carry the spirit of the Wren bird, a symbol of strength, adaptability, and unwavering determination, as we forge ahead on our journey. Together, we embrace the limitless possibilities of game development, encompassing all genres and captivating players with unforgettable experiences.

Weaned on D&D, Warhammer, and novels set in the Forgotten Realms or Krynn, Alex stood no chance. Now the archetypal nerd with an RPG obsession, he has embraced his fate and is at peace.

Naturally, he developed a keen appreciation for statistics and data analysis which has served him well, both professionally and, more importantly, in developing the core mechanics for Beyond the Veil. Now he spends way too much time running simulations and crunching numbers than is healthy for a married man and father of three, but games don’t make themselves… no matter how hard you wish for it!

As an ‘Ever DM’ the chance to tailor an entire rules system to his will was one Alex simply could not pass up.

Dan Thut, CCGF
“General hanger-on and cheerleader. Also knows some stuff about marketing”

Dan, cousin to brothers Paul & Alex, first encountered TTRPGs through the 1st Ed Red Box D&D, back in the day. Most memorable event included a PC death due to an innocent exploding cucumber. More recently, four (count them), four consecutive natural 1s led to my 5e Bard accidentally killing our party’s obnoxious Dwarf Fighter. It’s the least he deserved.

Dan is much less involved in the development of ‘Beyond the Veil’ than the brothers, but leans in to the project in many ways.

Paul is the eldest of the team and therefore should know better, but as time has told… he doesn’t!

The “creative” one of the bunch and the one that comes up with random ideas, mechanics and rules at 3am in the morning and drops them on everyone the next morning for them to work out the “finer details”.

Paul is an award winning artist & Illustrator who dabbles in graphic design, website development, video production and day dreaming, although self taught in all of them.

Paul’s rogue was also the recipient of the exploding cucumber!
