Overview

‘Haunted: Beyond the veil’ is all about storytelling. You and your friends get together to take on your own role in a ghost story, guiding your characters through paranormal investigations looking for evidence of entities, finding & gathering evidence, finding resolutions for your client or the entity, upgrading equipment, gaining reputation and much more.

Basics of play

The Haunted: Beyond the veil roleplaying game is about storytelling in a world occupied by the paranormal and supernatural. Like any roleplaying game, Haunted is driven by your imagination and immersing yourself in your character and the environment.
Haunted brings sitting around the campfire telling ghost stories to the roleplaying table and puts you in the place of the characters of all of your favourite scary stories.
It’s about picturing a door slamming shut on it’s own in an abandoned house and imagining how a paranormal investigator might react to the challenges that scene presents.

In the Haunted universe, the possibilities are limitless.

The ‘Haunted’ core rules give structure to the stories—a way of determining the consequences of the investigators’ actions. Players roll dice to determine whether they detect anything paranormal and whether they have managed to capture any evidence, if their character becomes fearful as their sanity drops, or manage to pull off some other ability based task. If you can imagine something it’s possible, but the dice make some things more probable than others.

Role of the player

Your first step is to imagine and create a character of your own. Your character is a combination of game statistics, roleplaying hooks, and your imagination. Haunted uses a cascading dice system for your abilities so you pick between a D4, D6, D8, D10, D12 and a D20 and choose which ability to associate with each die. The ability you place your higher numerical value dice into defines your character, for example a player placing a D20 into the mental ability is more inclined to be knowledgeable. You also invent the personality, appearance, and backstory of your character. Once completed, your character serves as your representative in the game.

With some friends and an open imagination, your team head out to build your reputation as paranormal investigators by capturing evidence and finding resolutions, testing yourself against an array of challenges and different types of entities.

Role of the ghost master

One player takes on the role of the Ghost Master, the game’s lead storyteller and referee. The GM is in charge of the investigations, while the characters navigate the investigation environments and decide the best plan for capturing evidence.

The GM describes the location and setting and the players decide what they want their investigators to do. Will they climb into the attic to investigate the footsteps? sneakily place a camera up there to see if they can capture the culprit? Let the psychic try to contact the supposed entity? Or will they run in fear!

The GM determines the results of the investigators’ actions and narrates what the characters experience. Because the GM can improvise to react to anything the players attempt, Haunted is infinitely flexible, and each adventure can be exciting, terrifying and unexpected.

An ongoing investigation

The game has no real end; when one investigation finishes, another one can begin, creating an ongoing story called a campaign. Just like with other tabletop roleplaying games, many people who play keep their campaigns going for months or years, meeting with their friends every week or so to pick up the story where they left off.

The investigators grow in reputation as the campaign continues. Each investigation that is resolved adds to the continuing story, but also earns the investigators new skills and talents. This increase in reputation leads to more complex investigations and tougher entities to contend with.

There’s no winning or losing in the Haunted game—at least, not the way those terms are usually understood. Together, the GM and players create an exciting and terrifying ghost story to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. The group might fail to complete an investigation successfully, but if everyone had fun, got spooked and created a memorable story, they all win.
